Artists’ Talk with Tanabe Chikuunsai IV & Sawako

The Hanamushin series considers the elegance of mathematically defined shapes embodied by bamboo as intuitively appealing. The geometric form is designed by carefully manipulating the Enneper surface equation introduced by Alfred Enneper in 1864, followed by a process of discretising the surface to extract a collection of curves that accounts for the material characteristics of the bamboo by Kaijima. The curves are then materialised as strips of bamboo by the master craftsmanship of Chikuunsai IV which is perfect, yet retains the unique shimmering quality of handwork and the natural material. It is considered that the Hanamushin series is a diachronic and cross-cultural work that touches on the unspoken beauty that humans perceive.​​​​​​​​

“Sake Brewery Art &Restaurant” as part of the Setouchi International Art Festival 2022.

Mitoyo Tsuru, where the event will be held, is located at
This former sake brewery is located within a minute’s walk from the port crossing to Awashima.
The building is a former sake brewery founded 150 years ago.
It is now being used as an accommodation and event venue, keeping the good old traditions intact.

During the “Sake Brewery Art Restaurant,”
eight chefs from within and outside of the prefecture will entertain visitors with a course meal, while 23 artists will exhibit and sell more than 200 works of art in this magnificent building.

Visitors to this event will be able to view the works of Chikuunsai4 while enjoying a meal prepared by the chefs that cannot be reserved.

This is a one-of-a-kind event where you can also stay overnight in a former sake brewery!

Introductory Exhibition
The LIFE CYCLES exhibition begins in the windows of the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles second-floor space with a large abstract bamboo sculpture and a small-scale installation, both powerful artworks that hint at the spectacular main installation inside. Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are introduced to the Tanabe Chikuunsai family lineage—four generations who have been weaving bamboo into works of artistic and cultural importance for a century. One bamboo basket from each of the three preceding generations and two works by Tanabe Chikuunsai IV demonstrate the evolution of bamboo basket weaving. This introductory section opens two weeks before the Main Gallery on July 13 allowing the public to observe the artist and his team creating the large, site-specific installation. (When the main installation is complete, a time-lapse video of its fabrication will be shown in the Sub-Gallery.)
