この作品は設置する場所の雰囲気を感じながら、その場で作成する「サイトスペシフィック・アート」と呼ばれる手法を適用している。竹雲斎がしばしば用いる代表的な表現方法でもある。
「80年を誇る百貨店の歴史と、初代が竹を使い始めて118年になる僕の家系の歴史を重ね合わせ、『つながり＝Connection』をコンセプトにして作成しました。
人々の生活に寄り添ってきた百貨店が、周年を期に新しく進化しようしています。私自身も襲名というタイミングで歴史を受け継ぎながらも新しい時代を作ろうとしています。百貨店の進化のエネルギーと、私の襲名というタイミングをリンクさせて完成させました」
作品は、エネルギーの循環、成長していくパワー、要素と要素をつないでいくことを、竹という素材を使って表現されている。まさに現代アートそのものだが、支えている技術は太古から受け継がれているものだという。
「あの作品は、亀甲編みと呼ばれる竹工芸の独特の技法を使って制作しました。この編み方は実は、8000年前の縄文時代の遺跡からも発見されている、日本人が生み出した技法なのです。作品は現代アートですが、技術は超古典的な手法です」
5メートル四方を超える巨大な立体オブジェが、接着剤やくぎなどを一切使わずに自立できるのは、しなやかで弾力性に富んだ竹そのものの素質によるもの。その上、竹の素質を熟知していなければ決して表現できない造形である。
「インスタレーションをする理由の一つは、『竹はこんなこともできるんだ』と感じてもらって、そこから竹の魅力を知ってもらいたいからです。
竹は、アジアにしか生育していません。それを工芸品に使い、しかもその技術を芸術の域まで高めている地域は日本だけです。それだけ、日本人にとって竹は身近で魅力あるものと言えるでしょう」
