This catalogue documents an exhibition at the Baur Foundation that brings together work by the French painter Pierre Soulages (b.1919) and the Japanese master bamboo artist Tanabe Chikuunsai IV (b. 1973). Soulages, still working at 102 years old, has painted almost exclusively in black since 1979 and is known as the “master of luminous blacks”. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV is a renowned bamboo artist, known for his twisting organic sculptures and room-sized installations made from tiger or black bamboo. The aim of this exhibition is to explore how their work resonates, despite different approaches, in the dark and light effects of their materials.

This is a two-person exhibition with French painter Pierre Soulages at the Bauer Museum.
I will exhibit 30 works.

Known as the painter of “black and light”, Pierre Soulages was born in 1919 in Rodez, in the South of France.
By masterfully turning black into a luminous colour, Soulages powerfully evokes the genesis of the world, which came out of darkness.

Today, he is considered one of the most innovative painters of the 20th century.

Having inherited the techniques passed down by Chikuunsai I in Sakai, Osaka over a period of 120 years, Tanabe Chikuunsai IV creates not only traditional works but also modern bamboo pieces and installations around the world.

This exhibition will showcase the new possibilities of bamboo craft through the works by the four generations of Tanabe Chikuunsaiwho, while inheriting traditions, took on new challenges.

From September 13th, 2019 to December 8th, 2019, “Japanese Bamboo Art from New York: The Abbey Collection, Gifts to The Metropolitan Museum of Art” will be held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

With the growing international appreciation of Japanese crafts, the unique beauty and expression of bamboo crafts are attracting worldwide attention.

Japanese modern bamboo crafts collected by Abbey and his wife in New York are known as the “Abby Collection”.

In 2017, when the collection was stored in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, an exhibition “Japanese Bamboo Art: The Abbey Collection”, was held. More than 470,000 people visited the exhibition and it drew a big attention.  This is the first exhibition of the Abbey Collection in Japan.

Along with masterpieces of modern crafts from the the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 75 bamboo crafts from the Abbey Collection will be displayed.

The work of of Chikuunsai Tanabe Ⅳ will be included as well.

Industrial arts – traditional ashita- which we found which fuses

“There will be field such as ceramic art and lacquer art, metalworking and tree bamboo work in industrial arts which is why”.
When “writer of different field is connected, what kind of work will be done”.
Challenge to bring about one art by relations that writers treating different material gather, and talk, and make trial and error, and are equal. “Industrial arts which fused” which became topic in October, 2014 came back to Wako hall.
It is said that the industrial world is made to be in a predicament for changes of low birthrate and aging and lifestyle. Seven writers who play an active part at home and abroad as if we dispel such severe situation. To my delight all the members can continue much busier writer activity than before.
Still we do it! We hold the second exhibition in Wako hall. “What does this theme have when we continue collaboration that is apt to terminate in transientness?.” You grow up as individual, and therefore can do it now that you grasped each other’s techniques and characteristics. We cooperate, and writers hating to lose very join in a struggle and are love and announcement of crystal of effort that we gave birth to desperately in this world.
“Plainness” as for the point that we want to recommend. Knowledge of the industrial history and special technique is unnecessary. There is not mysterious concept that is common among modern art. You have you go to visit venue, and please exchange words with writer directly once. The new world spreads out in front of all of you by all means. Many all works which we produced when Tokimec writers did not want to regret now even if this time became last. Check it out!

I met Takashi Wakamiya,  lacquer artist in 2008.

I accidentally exhibited works at the same place at the Asian Art Fair in London.

In the past 3 years, there was a big stage for me that I succeed the master name Chikuunsai the 4th.

Among them, I was inspired and taught many things such as Mr. Wakamiya ‘s work on the work, shaping ability, designing power and so on.

There are many things that I could not grow without Wakamiya.

This time with collaboration of bamboo and lacquer

I expressed the twelve signs.

It is a culmination of just one of the collaborations with Mr. Wakamiya.

Mr. Nobuya Maekazi, an art historian, gave a gallery talk.

I did a demonstration with three children in front of the installation.

I would like to touch bamboo gradually and let them know the wonder of bamboo art and bamboo art in their hearts.

And someday, I hope someone of them will succeed the fifth generation.

To keep tradition is to keep challenging.” ―　I was determined to make this family precept the base of my work when I succeeded to the title of Chikuunsai IV. Tradition is not built up by repeating the same; it can only be created through constant challenge. While searching for the challenges assigned to Chikuunsai IV, I got to know Ms. Sawako Kaijima.

When I first met Sawako Kaijima and saw her work, I was shocked. I saw a new world beyond my imagination. I felt something urging me toward the future – something guiding me toward a collaboration with her. A fusion of traditional art and technology – I feel that is the new potential for passing down traditional art while continuing to develop it.

Today was the first day of the exhibition at Nihonbashi Takashimaya.

In my work, Ms. ShuHo Sano who is a flower artist ,gave me a flower arrangement and it was the opening of the exhibition.

It was truly beautiful and she fascinated you.

Thank you for adding flowers to the exhibition.

This exhibition is a work that I made over 3 years.

It was everyday that my father passed away and I felt the weight and responsibility of inheriting the fourth generation bamboo chunkai in my skin.

I would like to thank my wife and my mother for supporting me so far.

I also thank you for all the staff who are also having disciples who are always spending time together.

I will be relieved a bit after the first day is over.
