Bamboo has long been cherished as a special plant within Japanese culture and has been regarded as possessing sacred powers.
It is a plant endowed with a robust vitality;
it is straight, dignified and beautiful, yet supple.
Why not experience the beauty and gentleness
of bamboo—with its delicate yet dynamic charm—
to soothe your soul and create your own piece?
Sakai boasts a culture of bamboo
which is said to have flourished during the Muromachi period alongside the tea ceremony.
This is a bamboo craft class where you can learn in historic Sakai.
We provide careful guidance even for complete beginners,
so please do feel free to join us.

Bamboo Craft Class Information

  • Details These classes are intended for beginners. Even those with no previous experience can enjoy learning bamboo craft. All materials are provided. Instruction begins with splitting the bamboo, allowing first-time participants to enjoy the entire creative process.
  • Instructor Tanabe Chikuunsai IV
  • Eligibility Open to those who have previously attended a hands-on workshop.
  • Schedule Two Saturdays per month
    Morning session: 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
    Afternoon session: 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
    Times may vary when study sessions are held.
  • Location Tanabe Chikuunsai Atelier
    3-2-7-1 Kitatadeicho, Sakai-ku
    Sakai, Osaka 590-0017, Japan
  • What to Bring Water will be used during the class. Please bring an apron or wear clothing that may get dirty.
  • Monthly Fee ¥8,000 for two classes per month after enrolment
    Materials and tools are charged separately.

Trial Class Information

  • Details Participants will create “A One-of-a-Kind Flower Basket.”
    The workshop provides an opportunity to work with bamboo and experience the atmosphere of the class.
  • Eligibility Open to first-time participants.
  • Schedule Two Saturdays per month, on regular class dates
    9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
    Times may vary when study sessions are held.
  • Location Tanabe Chikuunsai Atelier

    Sakai, Osaka 590-0017, Japan
  • Participation Fee ¥4,000, including materials
